What the hell is Scrub Sport?
Scrub Sport is an online fighting game league for "the rest of us". If you're new to the game or just don't have time to keep yourself at a pro-level, this might be your new home.
Our primary goals in operating Scrub Sport are to:
1) Offer a casual, friendly and fun environment for people to play.
2) Give new players an opportunity to experience tournament play and ultimately level up their game.
What games do you run leagues for?
Currently, our major interest is in Street Fighter 4. We have run leagues for games such as BlazBlue as well, but we will only have official leagues for games that have a high amount of interest with the players.
Even if we might not be doing an official league, we definitely encourage players to run their own tournaments for whatever game they wish.
What type of leagues do you run?
We have two different types of leagues: Weekly Ranbat and Monthly Round-Robins.
Ranbats (Ranking Battles) are run on a strict, weekly schedule and are more geared towards dedicated players. The tournaments will be held at a certain time/day each week. It is a double-elimination tournament and you will score points based on your performance/final standings. Those points are calculated over the course of a "season". Once the season is concluded, the player with the most amount of points is declared the winner.
The Monthly Round Robins are month-long tournaments compromised of several divisions (based on number of players and skill ranking). Each division will consist of no more than 8 players and you will only play people in your own division in that tournament. You will be given your list of opponents for the month and you will schedule those matches at your leisure with them. This allows for a more flexible schedule. In order to ensure that you are usually playing players of your skill level, at the end of each tournament, the top 2 players will be moved up to a higher division, while the bottom two, will be bumped down.
Can anyone sign up?
Absolutely. We welcome anyone that wants to level-up their game. However, bear in mind that Scrub Sport is primarily comprised of casual, entry-level players. There's nobody pro-level here. We'd like to keep it that way so as not to scare away new players. It's called Scrub Sport for a reason. If you're a high-level player just looking to dominate, you're wasting your time. No XP for you - only bad karma.
How do I sign up?
You'll first need to register an account here on the site. Please use an email address that you do not mind receiving communications emails at. Don't worry, you won't receive any spam - strict Scrub Sport bidness only. You will also need to create a free account at Challonge.com; also free of cost and spam. You will need to ensure that your username and email match your account here. This ensures that your opponents will know who you are and that League Officials will be able to successfully add you to tournaments.
Whoa, what's this Challonge business?
Challonge.com is a web-based tournament generator, manager, life saver. We had previously used a complicated and very unfun spreadsheet method to keep track of scores and standings. Challonge automates everything for us. The developer has been amazing and is frequently making updates for additional functionality - many of which we will be utilizing here on Scrub Sport.
Does Scrub Sport or Challonge cost anything?
Nothing at all. Both are completely free to use. The downside, of course is that there will not be any physical prizes awarded to tournament winners. But, hey, if you wanna donate something up as a prize, by all means.
What if I can't commit to a league, but still want to play?
Bring it on! We'll typically have a certain night out of the week that a lot of us will get together and play - whether it be official matches or just casuals. Come and hang out.
